2026 Field Projects

Drought experiment

Laura is interested in how the types of plants present in a meadow influence their response, and the insect community, to drought. She is conducting a drought experiment with rain-out shelters and will be surveying the Lepidopteran and plant community over the summer.

Heat wave experiment

Olivia (in red)’s project aims to understand how heatwaves affect plant nectar production, and how these changes impact monarch nutrition. She is using open-top greenhouses and portable heaters to increase air temperature, simulating projected climate conditions for 2050.

Pollinator garden surveys

Aalia is interested in what local and landscape factors influence insect diversity in pollinator gardens around Ottawa. This summer she is searching for many different types of insects to see what types of garden practices are most important in supporting multiple trophic levels of insects.
